Sustainability & social value

Building services that lower carbon — and lift communities.

Sustainability is written into how Stein Group operates and how we deliver. We measure and reduce our own carbon footprint, help clients find the most effective route to their net-zero obligations, and invest in the people and communities we work in — governed by board-level policy, reviewed and signed off at Board level.

Our approach

Policy first, then measurable action.

Our commitments are set out in board-approved policies — a Sustainability Policy, an Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) Policy and a Corporate Social Responsibility Policy — each reviewed and approved at Board level. They are not statements for a shelf: they set the standard we design, procure and deliver against, and the yardstick we hold ourselves to on every estate.

As a multi-discipline mechanical, electrical and renewable-energy contractor, we sit at the point where a building's carbon performance is decided. The systems we design, install and maintain — heating, ventilation, cooling, lighting, controls and low-carbon technology — are the biggest levers a client has over their emissions. That gives us both a responsibility and a genuine ability to make a difference, on our own footprint and on theirs.

Carbon reduction

Measuring and cutting carbon across every scope.

Our Sustainability and ESG policies commit us to measure and reduce our carbon footprint across Scope 1, 2 and 3 — the emissions we control directly, the energy we buy, and those across our supply chain and delivery.

Measure across Scope 1, 2 & 3

We account for direct emissions, purchased energy and supply-chain impact — because you can only reduce what you measure.

Improve our own efficiency

Reducing the carbon intensity of our offices and operations, and cutting energy waste in how we run the business day to day.

Electrify the fleet

A planned transition of our vehicle fleet toward electric and low-emission vehicles as infrastructure and models allow.

Sustainable procurement

Buying responsibly, favouring lower-carbon products and local suppliers, and building environmental expectations into our supply chain.

Cut waste, recycle more

Reducing waste on our projects and in our offices, increasing recycling and diverting material from landfill.

Use water wisely

Improving water efficiency across our operations and the systems we design, install and maintain.

Scotland has a statutory target of net zero by 2045. Our carbon-reduction work is aligned to that national trajectory, and we support our clients — many of them public bodies with their own duties — to meet it. Full carbon and ESG policy documents are available to clients and tendering authorities on request.

Client net zero

The most effective route to your net-zero obligations.

Most of our clients carry a net-zero duty of their own. We help them find and deliver the most efficient, effective route to it — not the most expensive one — by combining low-carbon technology with the efficiency measures that pay for themselves.

  • Solar PV, battery storage and on-site generation
  • Air-source heat pumps to replace fossil-fuel heat, REFCOM (F-Gas) certified
  • EV charging infrastructure for staff, fleet and visitors
  • LED and lighting-controls retrofit for fast, certain savings
  • BMS, metering and monitoring to prove performance over time

Low-carbon building services and renewable energy by Stein Group
Social value

Good work, fairly done.

As a national employer headquartered in Scotland, we believe in developing people and putting something back into every community we work in — right across the UK. Our commitment to fair, secure, quality employment is set out in policy and lived on site.

Growing our own

A structured, four-year apprenticeship pathway through recognised Modern Apprenticeship frameworks in electrical installation and gas engineering — investing in the next generation of engineers.

Fair Work First

We support the Scottish Government's Fair Work First principles — fair pay, secure work, and an effective voice for our people.

Secure, quality jobs

We invest in directly-employed, quality employment rather than a churn of insecure work — building a workforce that stays and grows.

Wellbeing & mental health

Trained mental-health first aiders and a culture where looking after each other matters as much as physical safety.

Community investment

Supporting the communities we work in — including volunteering time and practical help where it makes a real difference.

Responsible supply chain

Favouring local and SME suppliers and paying our supply chain promptly — because prompt payment keeps small businesses strong.

Governance

Backed by policy, certified by standard.

Our environmental and social commitments sit inside independently certified management systems, so they are audited — not just asserted.
